Above headline is most likely why the Dems have done this in AZ.. the money saving excuse does not hold merit as AZ SOS says there will not be significant savings.
Dems to forgo presidential primary, hold party-funded caucuses instead

The Arizona Republic
Hoping to save taxpayers some money, the Arizona Democratic Party will forgo a 2012 presidential preference election and instead pick its nominee and select convention delegates through party-funded caucuses.
The caucuses will be held March 31 in Arizona’s current eight congressional districts, said Jennifer Johnson, a state party spokeswoman. The Democratic National Convention starts Sept. 3 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Republican presidential preference election is Feb. 28. That race has plenty of drama, but there is little suspense surrounding the Democrats’ all-but-certain renomination of President Barack Obama.

Great idea (sarcasm). Maybe the usurper will try to eliminate the general election for “cost savings” too? It’s “for the children.”
